It was 1993 when Martien Burgers together with his wife Corrie and their 3 sons, Wouter, Frans and Ard were running a succesful pigfarm for over 15 years. Horses always were the biggest hobby of Martien and therefore it was decided to build a big stable 3km ahead of the current location. In 1994 the stable was completed.
In 1996 Martien had the possibility to sell the pigfarm to an interested buyer. In good understanding was decided to sell the pigfarm and to move to the horsestable. The next 2 years were spent building the house while living in a small temporary unit. When the house was finished in 1997, son Frans was already fully active in the sport and good results were achieved.
Recently the farm was expanded by a small living unit at the front containing a big living room, kitchen, 3 bedrooms and a bathroom/toilet.
Meanwhile a few things have changed. Son Frans is working with Martien full-time at home. Riding the jumping horses and other jobs so Martien has more time to be on the road on the lookout for fresh good horses. Also the new purchased 6-place horsetruck aids this cause.
The company is running smoothly in all it's glory and we are all very proud on all things achieved. There are however still many plans for the future. But these take time to guarantee the quality. This is something it always has evolved around with the horses as well: quality.
In 1996 at the Olympics in Atlanta (US) there were 2 horses participating sold by Burgers Stables. It concerns here: Cupido (v. Kommandeur) under Jane Bredin and Enfant (v. Ubis) under Vicky Thompson. Off course this was a great moment for the stable.
In 1995 the dressage stallion Kimberley (v. Cabochon) and in 1999 the jumping stallion Oklund (v. Holland) were approved as KWPN stallions. You can read more on this in our 'Stallions' section.
In 2001 an offspring of Kimberley, Regent under Sylvia Naagen, got the highest grades during the preselection for the VSN-finals for the dressage topics.
In these years the international trade has grown considerably. Where in the old days sporadically a horse was sold to England there are dozens of horses being sold each year now to England, US, Canada and Spain. Burgers Stables is always interested in expanding it's international contacts for a good cooperation and business.
